Pre-Reading Skills

We welcome children of all ages to participate in library programs. In accordance with the Ontario Child and Family Services Act, children under the age of 10 must be accompanied and adequately supervised by a parent or responsible caregiver.

For school-age children who love to create with Lego and other building materials.
Keswick Branch, Tuesdays from 6:00-6:45pm (jr. kindergarten up to & including Grade 1 + a caregiver)
Keswick Branch, Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00pm
(school age children Grade 2 and up)

for families with children 7 and under (plus their siblings)  are invited to join us for a fun filled program featuring lots of family reading time, special early literacy activities and group stories. Parents must accompany their children.

Mother Goose on the Loose is an early literacy program that uses rhymes and songs to help pre-reading children get ready for reading. For children 0-30 months – siblings welcome (up to 2 children per adult).

Learning starts at birth! Research shows that children learn the skills they need to read years before they start school. To ensure every child is given the best possible chance to succeed, GPL has adopted the Every Child Ready To Read program developed by the Public Library Association. We're making sure every child in Georgina is ready to read.

for 0-3 + siblings
The Little Bookworms program is designed for children from
newborn to 3 years of age. Do you want your baby to be a lifelong reader? Now’s the time to start reading aloud. Not only is it fun for both of you, it also helps your child begin to develop language skills. Reading can help calm a fussy child... and an overwrought parent.
Keswick Branch - Tuesdays or Wednesdays @ 10:30 to 11:00 am

Taught by a certified Red Cross instructor
Children must be 11 years of age by start of course. Proof of age required at time of registration
Cost: $45 per child Registration must be made in person by parent or designate with signed permission and payment.

Are you wondering when it's safe to leave your child at home alone to run a few errands? Does your child need to spend a few hours home alone before or after school due to your work schedule or other commitments?  Kidproof can help your child become prepared and confident to be At Home Alone.  This entertaining child safety workshop is designed to prepare children to look after themselves during the times you aren't there.
Cost: $25 per child. Registration required in advance of course date.

Pre-reading Skills (back to top)

An hour long format that focuses on the following six-pre-reading skills: 
PRINT MOTIVATION
– I like books! - developing an interest in books and learning to enjoy books and reading
NARRATIVE SKILLS – I can tell a story! -  learning to describe things and events and tell stories
LETTER AWARENESS – I know letters! -  learning that letters are different from each other, learning their names and sounds
PRINT AWARENESS – I see words! - noticing letters and words, following the words on a page and learning how to handle a book
VOCABULARY – I know words! - learning the names of things
PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS -  I hear words! - earning to hear and play with the smaller sounds in word

Regular attendance will greatly enhance your child’s school & reading readiness.
The Story Hour program is designed for children 3 years of age and older. This program will acquaint children with the six pre-reading skills through songs, finger plays, rhymes and stories and games. Please note - this program runs from 9 to 12 weeks depending on the session.
When your child comes to Story Hour, he or she will experience many things: social awareness and interaction, sharing, developing friendships, fun and familiarity with important school readiness skills.
