Computers in the Library

Childrens Services computers are available for computer CD ROM games including Dora the Explorer, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Blues Clues, Skateboarder, Harry Potter and many more. Ask at the Circulation Desk for games available at each branch.

Many of our kids computers also have Internet access, for Webkinz, online games, or homework help. In order to use one of these computers, children age 0 - 15 must have a signed permission form from a parent or guardian. Click here to get a copy of the permission form. Children's use of the computer and Internet is governed by the library's Public Access to Computers and Internet policy.

Each Library branch also has a Discovery Centre, which are non-Internet computers with dozens of fun and educational games pre-loaded.

Class Visits: Frequently Asked Questions
Georgina Public Libraries

Q. How do I schedule a class visit to the library?

A. To schedule visits to the Main Library for children’s classes, call Beverley Walsh, Children’s Services Coordinator, (905-476-5762 x107). She can give a tour of the children’s area or library (depending on age and time available), read a story, facilitate an activity, or give instruction on using the online catalog. You should give Ms. Walsh 2 weeks advance notice for a visit.

Q. I’d like the students to get cards. What do I need to do?

A. We are so happy you’d like to initiate your students’ use of the library! This will take some advance planning, but is not too difficult.

  1. Two weeks before your visit, send the enclosed letter home to parents asking them to drop-in to the library and apply for a child’s card.   This letter will also explain the benefits of having a library card for their child.   Parents will be encouraged to apply for a personal card as well.

Q. Can the children check out books with their new cards?

A. Yes, they can. You should limit the number of books they check out on this visit to 1.  Parents should be made aware that they are responsible for their child’s library books and not the school should children be allowed to take their books home.

Q. Some of the parents did not make it into the library to get library cards for their children. Can they still get cards?

A. Yes, if they come in on the day of their child’s visit (before hand).  However, we strongly recommend that a parent come in before the “visit day” to avoid a back-up at the circulation desk.

Q. I’d like to get a card too, but I don’t live in Georgina.

A. Great idea! If you check out books from the library, your students will better appreciate the power of a library card.  If you are working in Georgina you are eligible for a Georgina Public Library card.  Please bring I.D. with proof of your current address.

Q. What are the library hours? Can our class come before you open?

A. The library is open from 10-9 Tuesday through Thursday, 10-6 Friday, 12-5-  Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday.  Our computer system and opening procedures requires a certain amount of time and staff, therefore, visits before opening is not possible at this time.

Q. Is there anything else I can do to make our visit go smoothly?

A. It would be helpful if you reminded your class of three library rules: Use quiet voices, leave food and drinks at home, and walk!

Q.  Will you visit us in our class room?

A.  Yes!  We would love to visit you – call Ms. Walsh to arrange it.  (Ask about our Digital Presentation – Online Research for grades 4+)

We can’t wait to hear from you!

PRINCIPALS and TEACHERS - BOOKTALKS
Bringing our library to you!

In an effort to increase readership amongst children in grades 4-8 I have prepared a number of booktalks I hope will spark their interest in reading and visiting the library.  I would love to come to your library or classroom and talk about our great collection of materials for children at the public library, do a number of Booktalks of interest to boys and girls and tell them what their local library has to offer.

Please call Bev Walsh @ ext. 107 to book a Booktalk at your earliest convenience.

TEACHERS and CHILD CARE WORKERS - PICK-A-VISIT

Georgina Public Libraries would like to extend an invitation to teachers together with their students to visit the library.  We encourage children to start the library habit early and make reading and books a part of their lives. If you have not received your Pick-A-Visit package by the end of September please contact Bev Walsh, Coordinator of Children’s Services at 905-476-5762 ext. 107.  This package will contain a letter to you as well as a letter that can be sent home to the parent. A Juvenile Card Application Form will be included to go along with the Parent Letter. The library is offering a number of choices that range from a simple orientation of the library to a Library Marathon, Scavenger Hunt, Project Research, or Reference and Research skills visits. Junior, Senior and grades one & two may choose to come for a tour of the library and to hear a story. Please call for details.

NURSERY SCHOOLS, DAYCARES AND PLAYGROUPS
