Meet the Library Board
Paul Nicholls

Paul Nicholls, Chair

In keeping pace with today’s world, one must consume and assimilate huge amounts of printed material; be it in paper form or, as is the case more often these days, electronically. We need libraries to support our society to be as intellectual and literate as we can be. That’s how Georgina will remain competitive into the future. Perhaps this makes literacy sound like work. Far from it! We offer a wide spectrum of service offerings to our members. Whether its internet access, government services, educational workshops, youth programming, or just getting something to read, we’ve got something for you. Here’s the thing: the library experience means different things to different people. No two people come to the library with the exact same goal in mind. Empowering that kind of client service in a fiscally responsible way is why I like working with the staff and board of the Georgina Public Library System. I think we have the best libraries around. When you walk through the doors of any of our 3 locations, or connect with us online at www.georginalibrary.ca, your individual journey begins. Come and join us at the Library! You can go anywhere from here!

The library has always been a place of comfort and belonging for me.  From my earliest memories of exploring with my siblings, then as a student at various schools and university, and as a parent with my own family, it remains a place I can continually experience in new ways.  As a lifelong reader I love knowing I can find something different each time I visit.

Becoming a member of the Georgina Public Library Board has enabled me to give back to my community and to an organization that has provided many lifetimes of value for me and my family.

Sir Francis Bacon coined the term "knowledge is power."  The term "power" can imply many things, but I imagine it to suggest the power to extract the most out of life's experiences.  This is what the public library provides.  Since Bacon's time, libraries have evolved to the point where we might turn his famous quotation on its head and propose, "power is knowing", that is, knowing all that the library can do for you.

I have been visiting my local library since I was a little girl.  I have many fond memories of sitting for hours, reading books at the library, and of taking home huge stacks of books to borrow.  Now a Mom, I bring my children to the Georgina libraries to check out books and movies, and attend many of the excellent programs that the library provides.  I feel that the library provides an invaluable service to the community and I am thrilled to be able to be involved as a library board member.

It's an honour and a pleasure to serve on the Library Board. I was interested in being on the board because I believe that libraries are the hub of our community. They're a place where people gather to be entertained, to learn, to study, and to get information about our community, our country, and our world. Libraries open doors for us, give children a safe place to study and do research, provide resources for job seekers, and allow us to make new friends in our community. If you don't have internet at home, you can access the internet at the library. If you like to read a lot (and like me can't afford to purchase several books a week), you can borrow books from the library. If you need information about a community social service and don't know who to ask, you can ask at the library. From books to DVD's, blue boxes to bus tickets, our library serves a vital role in our community, and I'm proud to be a part of it and to be able to contribute to my community by serving on the Georgina Public Library Board.

The Library offers great opportunities to the family.   To quote Steven King, son of a single mother, the library books used by them were how they took their vacation.   This is great, everyone can afford to go to library and discover great treasures and knowledge.
